Camano Island Fun

We enjoyed a great week of camping with friends on Camano Island late last month. While at the beach one day, the kids noticed a bunch of logs that seemed to offer some promising fun. These photos show how their adventure unfolded.

Patty Pan Girl

We found these two patty pan squash in the garden today. We thought it was funny to find two totally different squashes from the same plant. They seemed to fit right together.

Colorful Harvest

Here's a little glimpse of today's harvest. I thought it looked so colorful all gathered together in this basket. We've got blueberries, plums, parsley, a yellow patty pan squash, a tomato, and two kinds of pole beans.

Saturday Morning Ride to the Farmers Market

I enjoyed a nice morning ride to the farmers market today. I picked up a whole lot of fruit: a yellow watermelon, two boxes of cherries, and a box each of apples, apricots, and peaches.

Windsurfing in Ashland, Oregon

Last month, Ben and I took the train to visit our good friends, Josh and Laura, in Ashland, Oregon. It was a lovely adventure filled with warm days, good conversation, and lots of fun. One evening, we went with their whole family to a lake where Laura's husband, Nick, took Ben and Josh windsurfing. They worked really hard trying to keep the sail up and catch enough wind to keep going. Nick was a great mentor for Ben. It was a wonderful challenge that Ben really enjoyed.

Wheat Harvest

It's harvest time on the Trinidad farm. Thanks to Cousin Margaret for these great photos. They still remind me of my Grandpa Ted, when he would take me with him to survey the wheat and ride the combine, oh so many years ago.

A Ride to the Farmers Market

I enjoyed an early morning ride to the Edmonds farmers market on Saturday. It was breezy on the way there and quite warm on the way back. There was a lot of delicious produce to choose from so I stocked up on fruit for the week as well as fruit to freeze for the winter months. I got a great deal on two half flats of cherries and some peaches from Tonnemaker Hill Farm. I also lucked out getting one of the last half flats of strawberries for the season from Frog Song Farm. I love summer!

This Week in the Garden

The hollyhocks are just starting to bloom.

We have two cucumbers so far, and lots more blossoms getting ready to fruit.

This zucchini is just starting to produce.

The sugar pie pumpkins are growing like crazy.

Pie Cherries

I picked a bunch of pie cherries yesterday at a friend's place. I was able to pick just the right amount for a pie. Are you wondering where the picture of the pie is? Too late. It's already half eaten. It's the first cherry pie I've made from fresh cherries, and everyone here seems to like it. Yum!

Veggie Gardens: May and June 2009

I took some photos of the backyard veggie gardens last month, and then again this month. We've had so much sun this month. You can really see how much everything has grown from May to June.

Snap and snow peas are sprouting up, along with onions, radishes, and broccoli

There's a lot of rhubarb just beyond the soon-to-be-planted bean trellises.

The marigolds on the left are happy, but you can barely see the carrots, beets, and turnips sprouting up. Broccoli, onions, and radishes are in the middle; peas are on the right.

Everything's getting taller!
The shelling peas, just beyond the bean trellises and to the left, will get to be about seven feet tall.

Flowers and Pumpkins

The beautiful foxglove are in full bloom right now. You can see a purple lupine on the left as well. I love this garden bed because I planted it entirely from seed last year, and it adds a lot of color along the walkway on the side of the house .

We have lots of sun here now after taking down three cypress trees this spring. Along with the sun-loving flowers, we thought it would be a good space for growing pumpkins and other squashes this year. From front to back, we've got zucchini, small sugar pumpkins, dwarf sunflowers, Jack Be Little pumpkins, and Howden Jack O' Lantern pumpkins.
